Les Explorateurs explores what synthetic images reveal about us: how visual memory works, what we recognise as real and what it means to create from images. Artificial intelligence is part of the film’s narrative itself, as the film ventures into a territory where image and reality begin to blur. A reflection that leads us to question our relationship with reality, truth and identity.

The protagonist recommends journeys to places he has never visited. On his screen, he watches beings he knows do not exist, yet their gestures and routines become familiar. When a blackout interrupts his exploration, he is left facing the distance between his life and his images.

If a synthetic image can awaken a memory or an emotion, where does lived experience end and imagination begin? His search leads to another question: perhaps he is not creating these images, but finding them somewhere they already existed.

For Pep Lluís Buades, cinematography becomes something like assembling a photobook from archival images: searching, selecting and finding connections. The film’s point of view takes shape through those choices.

Jordi Ferrer places the limit in the story. Each image has to serve what the film wants to convey, without leaving the film on hold for a technical improvement that might always be just around the corner.

Carlos Castelló describes editing as an ongoing conversation with the director. New shots can be requested from the editing room, so image-making and editing develop together.

A new suggestion can reopen a sequence that seemed finished. That freedom makes the process a series of shared decisions, including one of the hardest: knowing when to stop.

Director and multidisciplinary creator Lucas Ortiz Estefanell works across film, documentary and new technological forms. His previous work includes the short film La Fenêtre.

In Les Explorateurs, he investigates the relationship between generated images, cinematic storytelling and the audience’s experience. At the centre of that search is the human perspective that gives images meaning.

The project is in the final stages of post-production, with completion expected in late 2026.
